The last week or so has seen a number of good responses to the recent article positioning layoffs of working mothers as a “fringe benefit.” The article was distributed through the Associated Press, and appeared in a number of publications concurrently. Here’s my response, in case you missed it.
Our friends at the Orlando Sentinel‘s Moms at Work blog write about the phenomenon here, quoting another good response from Judith Warner on the Domestic Disturbances blog at The New York Times. C.V. Harquail continues the good fight at Authentic Organizations with a fascinating and incredibly well-researched analysis of the real consequences of layoffs for women, and specifically working mothers.
I’m tremendously heartened by this response, and am again reminded of the web at its best. Great writing, great oversight, great social criticism. Let’s keep it coming.
